Change management- steuben story

Change or perish

“The world as we have created it is a process of our thinking. It cannot be changed without changing our thinking.” Albert Einstein
The Steuben story:
Hollywood blockbuster film, “Risky Business” which was released in 1983   and   was an offbeat comedy and action movie about a rebellious teenager who turns his parent's home into a brothel while his parents were away to repay some debt he had accumulated.

The movie had Tom Cruise as the rebellious young lad and sexy Rebecca de Morney co-starring as the liberated call girl Lana. The film had  high impact  influence on  that generation, as  it propelled Tom Cruise into a box-office stardom besides ; the film  also launched another superstar “Steuben” as the most sought after gift of the super-rich not only among the capitalistic American elite but among the elite and  super rich strata  of entire world. The movie had famous Phil Collin's song “I can feel it coming in the air tonight” where the steamy hot and sexy scene depicts Tom cruise and Rebecca having sex in the subway train.

The super-rich family of the teen had Steuben collections. Steuben thus got positioned in the best premium segment. Hollywood rarely launched anything, unless it had huge money spinning potential. Risky business the film, was projecting typical American cultural values of capitalism, materialism, loss of innocence of a child, coming of age of child, besides typical status symbol possession of super rich Americans -Steuben.  For example, in one of the important scenes in the film Joel, a prime character was having a nightmare as if his house being circled by police squad cars and the police arresting him for rape while his friends and family watch in horror. Joel makes phone call to a gorgeous blonde and call girl and they end up having steamy sex all night. The call girl Lana, demands $300 for her services and when Joel goes to the bank to get cash, Lana disappears with the expensive Steuben crystal egg which was his mother’s proud collection. Joel manages to trace Lana at a restaurant and demands the Steuben egg back, but was confronted by Lana's pimp, Guido, pulls a gun to shoot. Joel manages to escape. After much action, the rare possession Steuben Egg reappears.

The movie centers around Steuben and Steuben thus got a prime place in the movie along with the top stars. The launch of Steuben was as famous as Hollywood heroes and heroines and remained as the most preferred choice of the super-rich and famous for gifting and collection.

To speak of exclusive customer type, the wedding gift from Prince Charles to Diana was Steuben in 1981. Steuben was the status symbol for not only the elite consumers but for a whole nation, The United States of America. So high was the brand reputation and the image of Steuben. It was said that the glass was so clear, one could walk through a sheet of Steuben and not even notice it. Such was the reputation of glass quality.

World famous Steuben Glass Works  founded in 1903 was manufacturer of handmade art glass and crystal, featuring blown, cut, and etched designs, and animal sculptures. Despite 108-years of glorious existence with exclusive and the super-rich customers, the company had to just fade away by pulling the shutters down of its prestigious factory in Corning NY, and also of its flagship store in Madison avenue which had become prestigious landmark in 2011. “America just became a little bit less beautiful. “Every Valentine's Day, for twenty years my wife received a Steuben heart. Now my heart breaks” was the tearful emotional outburst of a loyal customer reflecting the emotional attachment the exclusive Steuben customers had on this magnificent product range. For many families of that generation Steuben had become status symbol. Steuben was acquired later by Corning Glass Works, New York, and it became the Steuben Division. For decades, Steuben had been the sole product that resolved the million-dollar question for the rich and famous as to what to gift and Steuben proved to be the most obvious choice for kings, queens, presidents, celebrity brides, rich government officials and heads of state. American Presidents were biggest fans and gave Steuben glassware as gifts to visiting heads of state.
